Every once in a while I run into someone that just really irritates me to no end. There is something about their voice, or the way they act, or some issue they keep harping on incessantly that just drives me nuts! They want to change the way I think or do something and needless to say I dig my heels in and resist any change I perceive they want me to make. You would think they would eventually realize they don’t have power over another person’s attitudes or actions. Maybe I should carry around a handful of little cards that have the Serenity Prayer written on them! (God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change; courage to change the things I can; and wisdom to know the difference.)
One day while finding myself frustrated with another person who seemed to be hitting my hot button on a certain issue, I was reminded by a friend of that ol’ bible verse that says: 3 “Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye?(Matt. 7:3)
Come to find out that the very thing I was irritated with in the other person was the very problem and characteristic in me that I didn’t like. Next time I find myself frustrated with another person my first step will be to check in with myself to see if that is something I am struggling with in myself!
