If you have ever been on an effective team, I am sure you have seen there are several things they have in common. First, there is one leader and they set the direction. If you have more than one, it can lead to confusion and division within the group. Second, everyone on the team is equally important. There is not one person that is not vital to the functioning of the group and each person is critical to their success. Lastly, the team is working towards a single goal. This goal or vision sets the direction for the group, even if everyone has different responsibilities – there is one end goal. These are three key behaviors of a successful team.
This is a great example of how a marriage should work and exactly how God designed marriage to work. First, in Ephesians 5:23 “For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church” God has designed the husband to be the leader. This does not negate the importance of the wife at all, her role is critical to their success, but he is stating there can only be one leader. However, God identifies that he cannot do it alone and he will need help. Genesis 2:18 “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him.” God designed the wife to support the husband in working towards their goals and she is vital to the success of the team. A better translation for the Greek word “helper” is “life-sustainer.” In all other instances of this word, it referred to God saving the lives of His people. The final key element is for both of you to work towards the same goals. This will keep you focused and going in the same direction.
How well is your marriage team working? Are you following a healthy design?
